Cinnamon lowers high blood pressure

Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices. This flavorful spice made from tree bark has been used for over 4000 years and its beneficial properties have been well known for that whole time. From the very beginning, this sweet spice has been used in teas, as a healing agent to help combat numerous ailments, and even for embalming and mummification processes by ancient Egyptians, according to an article in the Miami Herald. Cinnamon contains some very healthy compounds as well, including fiber, manganese, iron and calcium.

According to a report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, cinnamon may also help to regulate blood pressure in those suffering from hypertension. A study was conducted by Georgetown University to determine the effect of cinnamon on the blood pressure and researchers were surprised to find that cinnamon lowered systolic blood pressure quite a bit. Since elevated blood glucose and elevated blood pressure often occur together in the same patients, cinnamon could be a potential natural method for combating both conditions simultaneously.

Add cinnamon to your diet in order to help lower your blood pressure. Since cinnamon tastes so terrific, it's easy to add it to various foods and recipes. Oatmeal is known for lowering cholesterol levels, so adding cinnamon to your morning oatmeal or homemade sugar-free oatmeal cookies is a terrific idea. There are also many other ways of consuming cinnamon on a regular basis in order to reap its health benefits. If you like making smoothies, you could sprinkle some cinnamon into the blender for added taste as well as to help lower blood pressure.

Very large amounts of cinnamon may be toxic, but up to one or two tablespoons worth taken on a daily basis has been found to be safe and produces excellent results. A good rule of thumb is to add one to two teaspoons of cinnamon (about 3 to 6 grams) into your daily diet. Consuming cinnamon in this quantity can be very effective in lowering both cholesterol as well as triglycerides, which are directly related to blood pressure. You can experience good result within a matter of two months only.
